There was a number of VP athletes competing at the Scottish Schools Championships on Saturday 13th March at the Magnum Centre, Irvine.

U14 Girls ; Gillian Black 8th, Eliza Chiswell 10th, Melanie Chiswell 17th, Millie Boyle 24th, Emma Ferrie 25th and Jude Sloan-Dennison 46th. Eliza and Melanie were part of the 2nd Team home to win Silver for Kelvinside Academy.

U14 Boys ; Damon Rafferty 68th

U15 Boys : Lewis Boyle 2nd, Liam McLoone 4th, Marc Rooney 15th, Fraser Barbour 24th, James Finlay 25th and Kieron Rafferty 30th.

Lewis, Marc, James and Kieron won Team Gold for Bishopbriggs Academy and Liam was part of the team that won Silver for Douglas Academy

U17 Girls ; Deborah Hannah was 5th and Amy MacLellan 25th

U17 Boys : Marc Austin 8th, Max Aitchison 9th, Ethan Sloan-Dennison 10th and Miro Ralston 20th

O17 Girls : Rhian Dawes finished 11th and helped her school Glasgow Academy to win Gold.

Good Luck to the individuals who have been selected to represent Scottish Schools at the British Schools in Truro this weekend.

The Road Race was held on Sunday 21st March at Rouken Glen Park, south of Glasgow.  VP-Glasgow athletes were once again among the medals.

The U15 Boys came home 2nd overall to win Team Silver and Lewis Boyle also finished 2nd to take home Individual Silver. Liam McLoone (8th) Marc Rooney (13th) Kieron Rafferty (23rd) and Fraser Barbour (43rd).

Hollie Young was the only representative in the U17 Woman's race and she finished 2nd to take home Individual Silver.

The U20 Womens Race was won by Josephine Moultrie, she took home Individual Gold and although they didn't have a full team, Rhian Dawes finished in 5th place.

The U13 Girls just missed the team medals and finished 4th overall, Eliza Chiswell (13th) Melanie Chiswell (18th) Millie Boyle (23rd) Gillian Black (25th) Emma Ferrie (39th) and Jude Sloan-Dennison (60th).

The U13 Boys did not have a full team although Liam Turner (18th) and Jamie Middleton (35th) gave a good account of themselves.

The U15 Girls also did not have a full team although Eilidh McEvilly (32nd) and Rachel Dick (43rd) had good runs.

The U17 Boys also just missed out on the team medals and like the U13 Girls also finished 4th overall. Ethan Sloan-Dennison (7th) Marc Austin (11th) Miro Ralston (24th) and Paul MacFarlane (29th)

Sean Fontana was our only representative in the U20 Men's race and finished 7th.

Well done to everyone who turned out to represent the club.

The Club has accepted an offer to take part in a bag packing fundraiser at Asda in Bearsden on Saturday the 27th of March. 

We will be within Asda from 12am till 5pm although we appreciate that not everyone can stay for the full session.

We need as many volunteers as possible to guarantee a good return.  Unfortunately Asda only allow bag packers who are 14 years old or over.

Sorry for the short notice but a cancellation from another organisation made this possible at the last minute.

All of the cash raised will be used to discount the cost of new training tops.

If you are able to assist, please contact Linda on 0141 563 7013 to confirm.  If anyone needs a lift from anywhere in the West end (speak to Linda) we will do what we can to help.

As well as bag packers, we do also need some parents to assist with supervision, training, counting money and providing lifts.  We will be very short handed on the day so please give a few hours to help Linda and the team.

Ros has dispatched the latest Newsletter for the U11's and U13's by e-mail.  For those who don't have access it is available here as an attachment.

As you may have noticed, the Message Board is stuck in a time warp (2005).  The company responsible have withdrawn the service to new users and have so far failed to answer e-mails requesting our annual renewal.

I'll try to contact them once more as I would like to retain the past messages.  If that fails then I will replace it with something similar.

All level 1 coaches, assistant coaches waiting on a course and any interested athletes are invited by Ricky Miell and the Sprint Group Coaches to attend an introduction to sprint drills.

The session will take place on Sunday the 28th of March from 10.30am at Scotstoun Indoor Track.

Following on from the introductory sessions the sprint group ran last year, this session will introduce athletes, coaches and parents to the technique drills used by the sprint group.

Coaches and parents would be advised to bring suitable footwear as the session will be interactive.

The Championships were held on Saturday the 13th of March at Cofton Park, Birmingham.  VP-Glasgow was well represented in the Scotland West team.

In the Senior Womens race, Nicola Hood was 32nd to finish with a time of 29:53.  Jo Moultrie was 43rd to finish with a time of 30:21.

Beth Potter was 5th in the U20 women's race with time of 21:05.  In the U17 women's race, Hollie Young was 42nd to finish with a time of 20:35.

Craig Young was 11th to finish the U15 boys race in a time of 15:24.  Maria Milliken was 172nd to finish in the U15 girls race with a time of 17:40.

A special mention goes to Liam Turner (pictured left) who completed the last leg of the McCain Cross Country Challenge.  Liam finished in 2nd place overall and received a trophy and £80 for his efforts.  A great achievement.

The Final of the Indoor League was once again held at the Kelvin Hall on Sunday the 14th of March. VP-Glasgow athletes were involved in the team finals and also the relay competition.

The U13 Boys finished in 2nd place in the League Final with the performance of the day coming from Euan Urquhart who was 1st in the Long Jump with a distance of 4.50m.  Also in the team was Jamie McKinnon (2nd in 800m), Arron Dickson (2nd in 200m), Kyle Wilson (3rd in High Jump) and Ruairidh Bryce (2nd in the Shot).

The U20 Men won the League Final with three 1st places for Calum Innes which included breaking his own league record when finishing the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.16s.  David Clark was 1st in the 200m and John McCafferty was 1st in the Shot.  The fourth member of the team was James Dunnage who was 2nd in the High Jump.

Our U15 Girls were 2nd in the League Final with the best performance of the day coming from Eilidh McEvilly when winning the Shot with a distance of 8.74m.  Eilidh was also 2nd in the High Jump.  Mhairi Patience was 2nd in the Long Jump and 2nd in the 60m Hurdles.  Also collecting the silver medal was Melanie Chiswell (4th in 300m), Paige Dickson (2nd in the 200m), Eliza Chiswell (4th in 800m) and Juliet Gold (4th in 60m).

More success followed in the Relay Finals:

Our U11 Girls team of Holly Little, Erin Ross, Leah Thompson and Monica Blair finished in 3rd place with a time of 2:21.83.

The U15 Girls team of Eilidh McEvilly, Megan Heafey, Paige Dickson and Mhairi Patience finished in 1st place with a time of 1:50.18.  A time which was faster than the winners of the U17 event.

Our U13 Boys team of Kyle Thompson, Scott Rankine, Aaron Dickson and Euan Urquhart finished in 3rd place with a time of 2:02.04.

The U15 Boys team of Russell Findlay, Ross Black, Patrick Bowman and Jamie Robinson also finished in 3rd place with a time of 1:45.53.

Several VP-Glasgow athletes took part in the Glasgow 5K Park run series on Saturday the 6th of March.

Ethan Sloan-Dennison was 3rd overall and 1st u20 to finish in a time of 16:33 (15th run).  Clair McCracken was 18th overall and 1st Lady to finish with a time of 18:44 ( 7th run).  This was a new PB for Claire.

Ralph Connolly was 23rd overall and 3rd Vet40 to finish with a time of 19:40 (11th run).  Rab Daly was 96th overall and 3rd Vet65 to finish with a time of 23:09 (7th run).  This was a New PB for Rab.

At the Lasswade 10 mile Road Race on Sunday the 7th of March, Tom Ord was 63rd to finish and  7th Vet50 with a time of 67:29.  Chris Sheridan was 82nd to finish with a time of 69:17.

Scottish Record

John McCafferty was representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the Combined Events International in Bompas, France on the 6th and 7th of March.

John broke his own Scottish Junior (U20) record set earlier this year at the England Athletics Combined Events Championships.  John scored a massive 5077 points to finish in 8th place.  His previous best had been 4825 points.

Well done John, great effort.

England Athletics - Birmingham

Two VP-Glasgow athletes returned from the England Athletics  Under 17 age group Championships in Birmingham on the 28th of February with Gold Medals.

Chris Barnes was 1st in the Shot Put with a distance of 15.06m and Andrea Gaffney was 1st in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.70m.

The sad passing of former Scottish Cross Country internationalist Bobby Calderwood earlier this week brings to mind a unique team of which he was very much part. A team from Victoria Park A.A.C who trained out of Scotstoun Showgrounds, Whiteinch Baths Mountblow and the Milngavie Laundry who then crossed the border and took the English Cross Country Championship out of England Besides Bobby this team also included an Empire Games silver medallist Andy Forbes, Scotland's" Zatopek" Ian Binnie and a young miler from Govan who went on the be an American Olympian and serve with the US Marines in Vietnam Alex Breckenridge In 1952 this team travelled to Birmingham and took on the best clubs of England like South London Harriers, Belgrave, Birchfield and Bolton Utd on their own turf and beat them, something that had never happened before and has only happened once since when Shettleston Harriers emulated them in 1971.

Hugh Barrow, Milngavie

His funeral will take place at 2.15pm on Monday the 8th of March at Cathcart Old Parish Church, Carmunock Road, Glasgow before travelling to Lynn Crematorium where a further service will begin at 3.30pm within St Mungo Chapel.

Old friends and club-mates are invited to join his wife Cathy, his sons John and Alec and his daughter Andrea after the service at the Carnbooth House Hotel, 80 Busby Road, Carmunock for tea and sandwiches.

We received the sad news that one of our oldest life members, Bobby Calderwood died on Monday the 1st of March after a long illness.  Bobby, who was 78 is survived by his wife Cathy, his sons John and Alec and his daughter Andrea.  Alec had recently returned from New Zealand and Andrea from London to be with their father.

Bobby joined Victoria Park in 1950 as a talented 19 year old and won his first National medal in the Scottish Youths Cross Country Championships that same year.  He again won Gold in 1952 as part of the Victoria Park team that won the Scottish Junior Cross Country Championships.

He was a winner again with the senior team that won the Scottish Cross Country Championships in 1956, 57 and 58.  Bobby's peers said that he had an ungainly running action but was determined and very competitive in competition and training

He was a regular winner also of the Edinburgh to Glasgow Road Relay Race, Victoria Park were 1st in 1952, 54, 56 and 57 where he ran the 5 and a half mile 1st leg from St Andrews Square in Edinburgh to Maybury Cross.  As you can see in the below pictures, Bobby had the honour of carrying the special champions baton from the Lord Provost of Edinburgh to the Lord Provost of Glasgow on several occasions.

He represented Scotland at the Cross Country Internationals in 1956 and 57 and as a result was awarded Life Membership of the Club.

Long after his running career ended, he continued to assist with coaching VP's young athletes at Scotstoun and was the club handicapper until quite recently.

Bobby's son John sent in the picture of Bobby's old running buddies (right).  Our own Andy Forbes is 2nd from the right, if you can recognise any of the other faces, can you post it on the message board.

Bobby had in recent years delighted in donating £1 for every year of his membership prior to the AGM.  His most recent donation was for £60.

Our thoughts are with Cathy, John, Alec and Andrea at this sad time.  I'll post the information relating to the funeral arrangements here when I have them.

Another successful year for VP-Glasgow Athletes at the Cross Country Championships held at Callender Park, Falkirk on 20th February 2010 with our U15 Boys, U17 Women and U20 Women all winning Team Gold Medals.

One of the most exciting finishes of the day was in the U20 Women's 4,800 metres race between 2 or our very own athletes Nicola Hood and Beth Potter with Nicola winning Gold in a time of 16.23 and Beth finishing just one second behind in 16.24 to win Silver, Abbey McGhee was fourth in a time of 16.49 and this allowed VP's under 20 women's team to win Team Gold . Josephine Moultrie finished in 6th place with a time of 17.08 and was our non scoring athlete.

Our U17 Women's team of Hollie Young 8th with a time of 17.34, Deborah Hannah 23rd in 18.42 and Sarah Potter 39th in 19.37 won Team Gold with Hollie winning individual Silver . Amy MacLellan 54th and Michaela Stephen 64th were our non-scoring athletes.

Our U15 Boys team of Max Aitchison 4th in a time of 13.42, Lewis Boyle 5th in 13.43 , Craig Young 7th in 13.49 and Liam McLoone 9th in 14.03 won Team Gold. The non scoring athletes were Marc Rooney 44th, Kieron Rafferty 61st, Fraser Barbour 74th and Jack Moreland 84th.

The U13 Girls team of Gillian Black 6th, Eliza Chiswell 28th, Millie Boyle 30th and Melanie Chiswell 33rd finished 5th overall. Emma Ferrie was 38th and Kirsty Viera was 56th.

Our U13 Boys were Liam Turner 19th, Jamie Middleton 60th and Damon Rafferty finished 101st. Our U15 Girls were Maria Milliken finished in 11th place, Rachel Dick was 72nd and Iona Wilson was 90th.

Our U17 Boys Team were Marc Austin 19th, Ethan Sloan-Dennison 21st, Hugh MacKenzie 53rd and Paul MacFarlane 75th finishing 6th overall.

In the Senior Women's race Claire McCracken was 24th and Susan Finch 44th

In the U20 Men's race Sean Fontana finished 9th and Max Ralston was 13th.

In the Senior Men's race Derek Watson Snr was 129th, Gerard Craig was 181st, Duncan Thomson finished 325th and Kenneth McVey in 393rd place.

Scottish National Masters CC Championships

The Championships were held on Saturday the 6th February 2010 at  Forres.

Only one stalwart from VP-Glasgow took part, Tom Ord finished 61st overall and 11th V50 in a time of 40:57.

Glasgow Parkrun. 

On Saturday 6th February 2010 at  Pollok Park in Glasgow, Ethan Sloan-Dennison finished 6th overall and 2nd U20 in a time of 16:54.  His 13th race in the series.

Rab Daly was 112th overall and 2nd V65 in a time of 24:05.  This was a PB on 4th race in series.

The Championships were held at the Kelvin Hall on Sunday the 14th of February and once again there was some excellent performances.

Jax Thoirs continued his recent run of form by once again breaking his own Club record for the High Jump set on the 30th of December.  Jax was 1st in the U20 event with a clearance of 4.70m.

Deborah Hannah was 2nd in the U17 Women’s 1500m with a time of 4.52.37s and Chloe Lambert was 2nd in the U17 Women’s 200m with a time of 25.35s.

Andrea Gaffney was 1st in the U17 Women’s Long Jump with a distance of 5.63s.  Diane Ramsay was 2nd in the U20 Women’s 200m with a time of 26.15s and 3rd in the 60m with a time of 8.18s.

John McCall was 3rd in the U17 Men’s 60m Hurdles with a time of 8.68s, Chris Barnes was 1st in the U17 Men’s Shot Putt with a distance of 15.84m and Sam Adams was 1st in the U17 Men’s Pole vault with a height of 3.80m.

The Championships were held once again on Saturday the 13th of February at the Kelvin Hall and VP-Glasgow athletes were once again among the medals.

The medal winners were as follows:-

Jamie Robinson was 1st in the U15 Boys 400m with a time of 55.59s

Eilidh McEvilly was 2nd and Mhairi Patience 3rd in the U15 Girls 60m Hurdles with times of 9.39s and 9.43s respectively. Eilidh was also 3rd in the High Jump with a height of 1.50m and 2nd in the Shot Putt with a distance of 9.18m.

VP-Glasgow U13 Boys “A” Team consisting of Kyle Thomson, Liam McHugh, Arron Dickson and Ewan Urquhart was 3rd in the Superteams Championship.

LSK Supplies Scottish Veterans Road Relay

The Vets Road Relay race was held at Strathclyde Park on Sunday 24th of January.

VP-Glasgow Ladies won the team event with fine performances from Sandra Branney 1st - 23:15. 3rd. fastest lap,  Kirsty Baird 1st - 24:30 and Clair McCracken 1st - 22:48. 2nd fastest lap.

VP-Glasgow Men finished in 16th place overall.  The Club was represented by Mark Ashby 13th - 21:49, Peter Ramsay 20th - 25:55, Ralph Connolly 16th - 23:58 and Kenny McVey 16th - 25:27.

Rab Daly competed for a VP-Glasgow/Kirkintilloch Composite Team and finished 25th - 28.16.

Well done to everyone who took part.

Saturday 6th February 2010.

VP-Glasgow athletes featured highly at the above Competition, gaining 47 points as part of LDC’s “Club First” programme which benefited the Club with the LDC “Club First Cup” and a cheque for £500.

Thank you to the medal winners who were as follows:-

Derek Gibb was 1st in the Men’s 1500m with a time of 4.08.79s

Chloe Lambert was 1st in the Women’s 200m with a time of 25.84s and 3rd in the Women’s 60m with a time of 8.04s.

Raymond Bobrownicki and Thomas Campbell were 1st and 2nd in the Men’s High Jump with heights of 2.17m and 2.00m respectively.  Ray once again setting a Club record.

Lucinda Logan was 2nd in the Women’s High Jump with a height of 1.71m.

Andrea Gaffney was 2nd in the Women’s Long Jump with a distance of 5.71m.

Jennifer Graham was 3rd in the Women’s Pole Vault with a height of 3.50m.

Erin Leggate was 3rd in the Women’s 400m with a time of 59.84s.

David Martin and Calum Innes were 2nd and 3rd in the Men’s 60m Hurdles with times of 8.49s and 8.51s respectively. David was 3rd in the Men’s 400m with a time of 48.99s.

Last but not least was our U15 Girls 4 x 200m Relay Team who were first with a time of 1.49.73s. The winning team consisted of Eilidh McEvilly, Megan Heafey, Paige Dickson and Mhairi Patience.

The annual 4k Championships were held at Bellahouston on Sunday the 31st of January.  VP-Glasgow athletes had an excellent day with the highlight being team Gold for the U15 boys.

In the 2k development races, the U13 girls team won Silver with excellent performances from Gillian Black 4th 7:32 ; Millie Boyle 6th 7:57 ; Emma Ferrie 10th 8:05 and Kirsty Viera 16th 8:16.

The U13 boys failed to put out a complete team but were well represented by Liam Turner 2^nd 6:44 and Jamie Middleton 17^th 7:42.

The U15 boys finished in 1st place, winning Gold.  It was an exciting finish to the line between Max Aitchison and Ahmed Hassan from Shettleston for 1st place with Max finishing one second ahead to win gold.

The times for the U15's are as follows: Max Aitchison 1st 5:50 ; Lewis Boyle 3rd 6:01 ; Craig Young 4th 6:05 and Liam McLoone 6th 6:08.  Marc Rooney 10th 6:40 ; Kieron Rafferty 16th 6:59 ; Murray Sim 18th 7:14 and Jack Moreland 20th 7:31.

Only three athletes took part in the 4k events.  Rhian Dawes was 4th U20 to finish with a time of 15:30.

Derek Gibb was 20th in the Senior event with a time of 12:26 and Sean Fontana was 6th U20 with a time of 12:50.

The 2nd of this seasons Club Road Races was held on Thursday the 28th of January from Scotstoun Stadium.  The first athlete home was Max Aitchison who set a PB of 9:10 for the 2 mile course.

There was several excellent performances on the night with numerous PB's.  Well done to everyone who took part.
