SWAL Match 2 - Meadowbank - 25th June 2006

Twelve VP athletes were selected to compete for Team West at this match, and for the first time there was representation in all four age groups. The weather was blustery with a strong wind against in the home straight; nevertheless, all athletes competed well - even those who had been partying the night before! Congratulations to all who took part, especially the seniors who filled in the gaps in the field events.

Results of VP athletes:-

U-13:  Caitlin Welsh was 3rd in the B 200m in a time of 30.20s.  Sarah Gray was 1st in the B Long Jump with a distance of 4.05m.    

Both girls were part of the winning 4x100m relay team.

U-15:  Christina Strachan was 3rd in the Shot Putt with a throw of 7.75m. 

U-17:  Rebecca Riches was 5th in the 100m with a time of 13.58s and 6th in the 200m in a time of 27.86s.

Gillian Galloway was 4th in the B 100m in a time of 14.21s and 5th in the B 200m  in a time of 27.67s.

Aisling McGhee was 2nd in the 300m in a time of 42.32s.

Rebecca Kay was 3rd in the B Shot Putt with a throw of 7.08m and 4th in the Discus with a throw of 21.04m.

Katie Riches was 3rd in the Long Jump with a distance of 4.82m, a new PB. 

Rebecca, Gillian and Aisling were part of the 4x100m relay team (4th).

Sen:    Sara Whigham was 1st in the 100m in a time of 12.58s, 1st in the 200m in a time of 24.95s and 6th in the Long Jump with a distance of 4.45m.

Lisa Doyle was 1st B in the 200m with a time of 25.31s, 6th in the B Discus with a throw of 13.96m and 2nd B in the Triple Jump with a distance of 9.63m.

Joanna Ross was 1st in the 1500m in a time of 4.21.98.

Alison Rodger was 1st in the Shot Putt with a throw of 14.11m, 1st in the Discus with a throw of 42.35m, 7th in the Hammer with a throw of 27.27m and 2nd B in the Javelin with a throw of 23.48m.

Katie Riches was 6th in the Triple Jump with a distance of 9.65m.

Courtney MacGuire was 3rd in the Pole Vault with a height of 3.20m. 

Sara and Lisa were part of the 4x100m relay team (3rd); Lisa, Joanna and Aisling were part of the winning 4x400m relay team.

Team West won the match by 50 points from ESH (subject to scrutiny!)

Chris Bennett

Chris took part in the second Hammer Grand Prix of the season at Tweedbank Sports Complex, Galashiels on Saturday 24th of June and threw a personal best distance of 59.27m.


 
Mens League - Pitreavie

Liam McDermidVictoria Parks senior men were in action at Pitreavie on Sunday 25th of June.  There was a vast improvement since the first meeting at Wishaw where the men suffered from lack of numbers.

The team finished in fourth place overall with 363 points, behind Ayr Seaforth with 432 points, Giffnock with 408 points and Law with 369 points.

Liam McDermid returned to action pictured right and was 1st in the A 400 hurdles with a time of 56.8s, 3rd in the A 100m with a time of 11.4m and was 1st in the A 200m with a time of 22.4s.

Charlie Murray was 1st in the B 400 hurdles with a time of 62.3s and was 4th in the B 100m with a time of 13.1s.

Martin Hayes clears the last barrierChris Watson was 2nd in the A 800m in a time of 1:57.4.

Derek Watson Snr was 4th in the B 800m in a time of 2:06.6 and was 5th in the B 400m race with a time of 55.5s.

Martin Hayes pictured left was 1st in the 3000m Steeplechase in a time of 10:26.7. 

Gerry Farrell was 2nd in the Hammer with a throw of 32.52m and 2nd in the Discus with a throw of 38.04m.

Martin Taylor also returned to action after a long lay off and was 1st in the Long Jump with a distance of 6.71m and 3rd in the Shot Putt with a throw of 12.1m.

Chris Watson in the 800mCalum Innes was 2nd B in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.78m.

Gregor Innes was 5th in the A 400m with a time of 52.5s.

The 4x100m relay team of Gregor Innes, Liam McDermid, Calum Innes and Martin Taylor finished in 2nd place in a time of 45.6s.

Victoria Parks 4x400m relay team of Derek Watson Snr, Chris Watson, Calum Innes and Gregor Innes finished in 2nd place with a time of 3:35.5.

Lewis in handcuffsLewis Wilson

On Sunday 18th June, Lewis took part in the U13 boys 3x800m relay race at Scotstoun along with his team-mates Paul MacFarlane and Grant McConnachie.

Still fresh from that experience, Lewis took part in the annual St Gregory's 4K from Kelvindale to the Botanic Gardens to raise money for the local Church.

We're still waiting on an explanation from Lewis (pictured right with his race medal) regarding his arrest.


 
Merger Talks

Four members of Victoria Park had an informal meeting with four members of City Of Glasgow at Scotstoun on Wednesday 21st June.

The nature of the discussions will be presented to the committee on Monday 26th of June, however if anyone has any concerns over the content of the meeting, Graham Smith, Gordon Innes, Ricky Miell and Abbey McGhee will happily answer any questions.


 
U20 and U23 Championships

David MartinThe age group championships were held at Scotstoun on Sunday the 18th of June. 

Victoria Park athletes had a very successful day with a handsome collection of medals to show for their efforts.

David Martin (pictured right) was 1st in the U20 200m final in a time of 22.43s and more importantly, first in the final of the 400m hurdles in a time of 55.41s.  An excellent performance in wet and windy conditions at Scotstoun.

Colin Severin was third in the final of the U20 100m with a time of 11.17s.

Alison Rodger was second in the U13 Discus with a throw of 42.65m and first in the Shot Put with a throw of 13.71m (Championship Best).

Thomas Campbell was third in the final of the U20 High Jump with a height of 1.85m, the same height as the second placed athlete, he had more success in the Pole Vault where he finished first with a height of 3.80m.

Martin HayesMartin Hayes (pictured left) was 1st in the U20 2000m Steeplechase in a time of 6:31.96.

Courtney MacGuire was second in the U20 Pole Vault with a height of 3.20m, again the same height as the winner of that event.

Chris Bennett was second in the U20 Hammer with a throw of 51.62m.

The U13 boys relay team narrowly missed out in a place in the final while finishing in an excellent time of 8:11.3s.

The U15 boys also missed out on the final by finishing third in their heat in a time of 7:04.6.

Lorn, Niall, Calum and GregorThe U17 men finished in second place in the final of the 4x400m relay in a time of 3:34.82.  Excellent performances from all four of the team that included Lorn Menzies, Niall Murray, Calum Innes and Gregor Innes (pictured right).

Paul MacFarlaneRelay Championships - Scotstoun - 18th June

The first relay race for the U13 boys starts at 1.45pm. 

The U15 boys start at 2.30pm and the U17 men start at 3.15pm. 

Athletes should arrive at Scotstoun no later than one hour before their event.

Good luck to the relay teams and all of those competing in the U20 and U23 Championships.


 

Womens League - Team West - 25th June

A minibus will be going to Meadowbank for this meeting of the SWAL.  Anyone interested should contact Kenny Gray to book their seat. 

Priority will be given to VPAAC athletes but any member of Team West is welcome to Join us.

The bus will leave from Scotstoun at 9.30am in good time for the first event at 12am.


 
Linwood Track

The new track at Linwood has now been lined and inspected and as a result it is now open for athletics.

The last four open graded events will now go ahead as planned on the following dates:

Wednesday 24th of June, Wednesday the 26th of July, Wednesday the 23rd of August and Wednesday the 13th of September.


 

Mens League - 25th June

A minibus has been booked for the trip to Pitreavie.  Anyone interested should contact Gordon to book a seat.

The bus will leave from Scotstoun at 9.45am in good time for the first event at 12am.


 
National Junior League

Courtney MacGuireVictoria Park was well represented in Team Glasgow on Sunday 11th June at the latest meeting of the National Junior League which is for under 21's.

The meeting, which was held at "Clairville", Middlesbrough finished with Team Glasgow in 2nd place with 513 points, just behind the winners Team Edinburgh with 558 points.

The athlete of the match awards were won by Victoria Park athletes.  Courtney MacGuire won the female award for achieving 3.40m in the Pole Vault and Thomas Campbell won the male award for a height of 1.95m in the High Jump.  Well done to both athletes.

Thomas also won the Pole Vault with a height of 3.70m.  Other winners included David Martin who was 1st in the 400m in a time of 51.4s.

David was also a member of the winning 4x100m relay team that included Calum Innes and the 4x400m relay team that included Gregor Innes.

Thomas CampbellOther notable performances included Aisling McGhee who was 2nd in the 400m in a time of 59.6s and was a member of the 4x400m relay team along with her sister Abbey McGhee and Moira Burton that finished 2nd in an identical time to the winners Team Edinburgh.

The next meeting of the National Junior League will take place on Sunday 16th July at Carlisle and Brian Donaldson has sent the following message:

There are places available in the Team.  If you have, or know off,  athletes who wish to be considered for places in the Team I would ask that you let the athletes know that this is the case and letting them have a copy of the attached form.

In order that the Team be in with a chance of competing in the Promotion Match, we must win the last Division Match. It would be spectacular if Glasgow were to produce a full Team, with athletes only competing in the events they train for.

Because this match is in Carlisle we will be leaving Glasgow on the Sunday morning and will be happy to have Schools' Internationalists competing.

Polaroid 10K - 8th June - Dumbarton

Kenny McVeyFive of the seniors were in action in the 3rd of the Polaroid 10k series.

Mark Ashby was the first of the three home in 63rd position with a time of 37:35.

Alan Hamilton finished in 65th place in a time of 37:52, Kenny McVey (pictured right) finished in 104th place in a time of 39:56 and Jim O'Hara finished in a time of 52:30.

Ken Mitchell did not finish, having retired injured.

A very good showing from a field of 846 competitors.

The now annual event has been going since 1987 and includes four races starting with Clydebank, Helensburgh, Dumbarton and ending with the Vale Of Leven.


 

Nike BMC Grand Prix - Watford

Joanna RossJoanna Ross once again set a new Club record on Saturday evening 10 June at the BMC Grand Prix at Watford and picked up a winners cheque for £400.

Joanna Ross (Victoria Park AAC) took over the pace in the last 200m of the Women’s 800m race and repelling a strong challenge from Liz Braithwaite (Herts Phoenix) she advanced her PB to 2:02.58, just 0.08 off the UKA development standard for the European Championships.

Joanna said:  "I knew the early pace was too fast for me so stayed off it but I felt good on that last lap and I'm looking to peak at the trials, though it will be hard as so many girls are running well."

Braithwaite set a PB 2:03.10, just ahead of Rachel Ogden (Worthing & District) who clocked 2:03.14.


 
Polaroid 10K - 1st June - Clydebank

Eight Victoria Park road runners took part in the second stage of the Polaroid 10k which started at the Playdrome in Clydebank.

Martin Hayes - 1st JuniorMartin Hayes was 21st overall and 1st Junior home in a time of 34:27 which is a new PB for Martin.

Ken Mitchell finished in 35th place and was the 13th Vet to finish in a time of 35:26.

Alistair Douglas was 60th and the 24th Vet to finish in a time of 36:42.

Allan Hamilton finished in 63rd position while setting a new PB of 36:48.

Mark Ashby was 69th and the 28th Vet to finish in a time of 37:01.

Ronnie Johnstone was 105th, 43rd Vet and the 7th Vet over 50 to finish in a time of 38:33.

Kenny McVey was 122nd, 51st Vet and the 8th Vet over 50 to finish in a time of 39:00.

Jim O'Hara finished in 509th place in a time of 49:37.


 
AAA's Under 17/15 Championships

Following requests after the AAA under 17 Indoor Championships, Glasgow Athletics Association has provisionally booked accommodation and transport for the AAA Under 17/15 Championships in Birmingham.

Transport will depart Glasgow on Friday 4th August at 2pm and return to Glasgow on the evening of 6th August probably around midnight.

Accommodation, breakfast and dinner will be provided, accommodation will be in twin rooms.  Cost per person will be £100.00.

It will be expected that all athletes are accompanied by parents, coaches or club officials.

Any athletes, parents, families interested in this trip please contact myself before18th June 2006.

More details will follow once numbers are established.

Scottish Schools Championships - Grangemouth - Saturday

Jamie SinclairDay two of the Scottish Schools Championships brought yet more medals to Victoria Park Athletes.

Jamie Sinclair (pictured right) was 2nd in the U17 Pole Vault despite retiring injured with a height achieved of 3.15m.

Jax Thoirs finished 3rd in the final of the U15 80m hurdles in a time of 12.94s.  He then narrowly missed out on a second medal when he finished 4th in the U15 Long Jump with a distance of 4.95m.

Gregor Innes was second in the U17 400m hurdles in a time of 61.53s.

Abbey McGhee was 2nd in the U17 800m in a time of 2:18.57.

Katie Riches was 5th in the U17 Triple Jump with a distance of 10.26m.

David Martin (pictured left) finished in 2nd place in one of the tightest finishes of the day in the over 17 400m hurdles in a time of 55.28s, only 2 hundredths of a second behind the winner.

Courtney MacGuire was 5th in the final of the U17 300m hurdles in a time of 49.42s.

Melanie Rankin was 5th in the over 17 200m in a time of 26.69s.

Scottish Schools Championships - Grangemouth - Friday

Victoria Park athletes had a busy day at Grangemouth on Friday 9th of June at the first day of the Scottish Schools Championships.

Chris BennettChris Bennett had the performance of the day by winning the U17 Hammer with a throw of 58.04m. Well done Chris.

Liam Hill won the U17 High Jump with a height of 1.86m.

Michael Gray just missed out on the medals when he finished 4th in the U15 800m final in a time of 2:16.56.

Martin Hayes finished in 2nd place in the over 17 2000m steeplechase in a time of 6:24.21.

David Martin won the over 17 400m in a time of 49.93s.

Calum InnesCalum Innes won the U17 100m hurdles in a time of 14.62s and set a new PB in the process.

Courtney MacGuire was 2nd in the U17 Pole Vault with a height of 3.10m.

Sarah Gray finished in 5th place in the U13 high jump with a height of 1.40, which should be a new PB.

Rebecca Riches finished in 5th place in the final of the U17 100m with a time of 13.25s.

Aisling McGhee was 3rd in the final of the U17 300m in a time of 41.96s which is a seasons best performance.

Melanie Rankin was 2nd in the over 17 100m hurdles in a time of 15.92s.

Iona Wilson and Sophie MillsCSSAL - Wishaw - 4th June

Victoria Park had a very successful day at Wishaw on Sunday 4th June.  The club finished the meeting in 1st place and are now equal in points with Dunfermline and West Fife who took the honours at the first meeting.

Everyone who turned out did their very best to give the club an excellent chance to gain promotion to Division 2 when the clubs next meet on Sunday the 6th of August at Linwood.

The icing on the cake was when Alison Rodger broke the Senior Womens League record for the Shot Putt with a throw of 12.81 metres.

Alison RodgerMartin Hayes set the tone for the day when he won the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 10.93.

Jax Thoirs won the U15 80m hurdles with Rory Stewart picking up maximum points by winning the B race.

Calum Innes and Stewart Booth repeated the feat for the U17 men in the 100m hurdles.

Neale Kelly won the Senior 110m hurdles in a time of 16s before suffering from a hamstring injury in the 200m.  Hopefully Neale will be fit again soon.

Davis Martin won the U11 80m in a time of 12s and Steven Thistleton won the B race in 12.7s.

Ross McCall won the U17 200m B race in a time of 25s and David MacDonald won the Senior mens 200m B race in a time of 25.3s.

Charlie Murray won the Masters B 200m race in a time of 27.1s.

Martin HayesPaul McFarlane had one of the performances of the day with a fine win in the U13 1500m in a time of 5:14.9.  Paul led from the start of the race to the end, he was spurred on by the prospect of achieving a better time than his cousin who was competing in the same event at Scotstoun at the same time.  Grant McConnachie made sure of maximum points with a fine win in the B race.

Steven Thistleton won the U11 long jump with a distance of 3.87m and Michael Gray picked up maximum points with his win in the U15 long jump.

In the U13 high jump, Victoria Park again picked up maximum points with wins for Sam Andrew A and Lewis Wilson B.

The boys and men completed their day with wins in the U11 4x100m, U13 4x100m, U17 4x400m, and Senior 4x400m relays.

Caitlin Welsh was 1st in the U13 hurdles B race in a time of 14.7s.

Melanie Rankin was 1st in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16s.

Sarah McDonald was 1st in the U11 80m with a time of 13.4s in a very close finish.

Iona Wilson won the U11 800m B race in a time of 3:13.6.

Abbey McGhee finished 1st in the U17 1500m in a time of 4:58.2.

Catriona Donald was 1st in the Senior womens B Shot Putt with a throw of 8.74m.

Alison InnesAlison Innes won the U15 B Shot Putt with a distance of 6.74m.

Alison Rodger won the senior womens Discus with a distance of 38.46m with Catriona Donald winning the B event with a distance of 28.84m and guaranteeing maximum points.

Eve Dunlop won the U11 B Long Jump with a distance of 2.96m.

Alison Rodger was 1st in the Senior Womens B Javelin with a throw of 22.29m.

Rebbeca Kay was 1st in the U17 Shot Putt with a throw of 7.54m with Katie Riches winning the B event with a throw of 6.67m.

Caitlin Welsh was first in the U13 girls High Jump with a height of 1.4m.

Victoria Park's U17 women won their 4x100m relay in a time of 53.1s.  The Senior relay team won their 4x400m in a time of 4:30.2.

Scottish Schools - Pentathlon and Relays

Gregor InnesVictoria Park athletes were representing their schools at Grangemouth on Saturday the 3rd of June.

Gregor Innes of Boclair Academy won the U17 Pentathlon with 2769 points, 43 points ahead of his twin brother Calum who finished in second place.

Abbey and Aisling McGhee were representing the High School when they won the U17 girls 4x100m relay with a combined time of 52.05s ahead of the second placed Glasgow Academy team which included Gillian Galloway, Emma Mallinson and Stephanie Davis.

Katie and Rebecca Riches finished in fourth place for Lomond School.  Courtney MacGuire was running for Lenzie Academy who finished in 6th place.

Abbey McGheeMax Martin picked up a winners medal while representing Glasgow Academy in the U14 final with a combined time of 52.21s.

Jonathan Byrne Leitch was representing St Aloysius College who finished the U15 boys final in 6th place.

The names of the athletes competing in the relays are not given on the Scottish Schools web site and as a result I will have missed out several of our athletes.  My spotter was high up in the grandstand at Grangemouth and didn't have her binoculars with her.
