UKWAL   4 June 2011  Copthall

The Senior team travelled to Copthall for the first of the three UKWAL matches.   Because of work commitments, exams etc, it was a much quieter than usual bus which left Glasgow on Friday morning.  The rest of the team were flying down from Glasgow and Edinburgh either later that day or early on Saturday morning.  Fortunately there were no ash clouds and the Easyjet flights all left and landed on time.  Everyone, except Jen who flew down early Saturday morning, was there for the team meeting later that night where we welcomed our new Higher Claim athletes – Caroline George, Rachel Hunter and Aileen Rennie from Ayr Seaforth.  Michelle Durbidge from Montrose, and a Secondary Higher Claim athlete, Fiona Gentles, from Springburn Harriers.  We had four late call offs in the three days before the match so there was a bit of negotiation at the meeting.

By the time Rhian Daweswe got to the Stadium it was a beautiful sunny day but quite windy.  The stadium is just next to the motorway junction but coaches have to go round the block through some narrow streets so it took an extra 10mins or so to reach the stadium entrance.  We made it in plenty of time to get the declarations in but before the numbers arrived.

With it being a joint BAL/UKWAL match there was a lot going on and a really good atmosphere during the day.  Our sprinters, Caroline, Rachel W, and Erin scored good individual points.  Caroline’s second place in the A 100m was particularly impressive .  An athlete was disqualified and refused to leave the track.  It took ten minutes to sort out the problem but Caroline showed great maturity and didn’t let it affect her race.   Jen stepped in to cover the B 100m but we were without a B 400m runner.   Kerry  ran two solid races in the 100mH and 400mH with Fiona warming up for her Steeplechase in the B 400mH

Erin and Rhian covered the 800m and 1500m and were well placed in both events and Fiona was a solid third in the Steeplechase.  Unfortunately we didn’t have cover for the 3000m.
We were lacking a bit in the jumps though Jen, as usual, got maximum points in the Pole Vault.  She covered A String Long Jump , Kerry covered A string Triple Jump  and Rachel W got us good points in the High Jump.

Our throwers were nothing short of magnificent contributing 64 points.  Rachel H and Stacey were first and second in the Hammer as were Michelle and Stacey in the Discus.  Aileen and Paula were fourth and first in the Javelin with Michelle and Rachel H scoring full points in the Shot while a few feet away, in the men’s High Jump, the Belgrave athlete not only broke the division record he broke the St Lucia national record.  Despite all this activity close by, they didn’t allow it to interfere with their performance.

Despite being short of sprinters, with our middle distance runners and a thrower contributing, we managed sixth place in both relays. In the end we finished fifth overall but were only ten points behind third place Havering Mayersbrook. An excellent result for such a small team.  Full  results are at this link.  Despite only doing two events, Stacey again won the Points Princess just ahead of Erin and Rachel H.  Rhian won the athlete of the match for a brilliant 800m where she managed to run down two athletes in the last 20 metres to finish second.

Saturday  was a great team effort and definitely one of the best matches I have ever been at.   With the distance and being a Saturday it was always going to be difficult.  Last year TVH were fifth in the second match and recovered sufficiently to get promoted to Division one so with a good turnout at Wigan and Grangemouth we can still do it.

Thanks to everyone and especially those who covered extra events. Thanks also to Donald Wilson for getting us such a good deal at the hotel in Luton.  Everyone was impressed.

Brooks, Soleus and Achilles HeelJimmy Lynch Small - Track Night

On Thursday the 12th of May, we hosted a special Track Night at Scotstoun when we were joined by representatives from Brooks, Soleus, Powerade and of course Katie from Achiles Heel.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the visit and Brooks and Soleus were delighted with the numbers taking part in the "Soleus Perfect Pace Challenge".

Bearing in mind that the challenge was to reproduce two identical 400m times at whatever pace you were comfortable with, the winner on the night was Jimmy Lynch Small with times of 1:43.65 and 1:43.66.

Congratulations to Jimmy, he received a supply of Powerade and a Soleus watch.

Brooks, Soleus and BrooksAchilles Heel - Track Night

On Thursday the 12th of May, we will be hosting a special Track Night at Scotstoun which will include a visit from our sponsor Achilles Heel.

Brooks will have a selection of their spikes and training shoes in all sizes.  Athletes can trial the shoes during their sessions if they like and once the session is completed they simply hand the fooSoleustwear back.

Soleus watches will have a competition running at the end of the training sessions, the "Soleus Perfect Pace Challenge".

Athletes will be given the opportunity to run a 400m lap with a Soleus watch (and a pair of spikes should they choose) and they will time themselves.  They will then take the watch off and try to run as close to the lap time when wearing the watch (pace judgement miss (PJM) time).

The closest athlete will win a Soleus watch and a pair of  Brooks spikes.  Soleus will record an average PJM time for the cluBrooks and Soleus Track Nightb and the result will be submitted to the national competition.

Soleus and Brooks will be timing and  Soleus will post the winning times on the Athletics Weekly website at this link.  Have a look at the current leaders.

Harry Tosen of Winchester had a PJM time of 0.04s.  The best Club average so far has been Bracknell with a PJM of 3.62s.

A Powerade sports scientist will also be on hand to discuss hydration techniques, tips and tricks to improve performance and hand out bottles of Powerade ION4.

It should be an exciting and fun night, hope everyone can make it.
