Indoor League - John Innes Retires
Also
at the Indoor League EGM, John Innes retired as Secretary of the League and they
are currently looking for a replacement.
If any member or parent of any member is
interested in assisting with the admin of the Indoor League they should contact
the Club Secretary in the first instance.
Be assured that full training and support
will be provided and that your services might ensure the future of the League.
John Innes continues in all of his other
posts, including VPAAC Membership Secretary. |

Indoor League - Final Cancelled
At
the recent EGM of the Indoor League, it was decided that it was not
feasible to rearrange the Final. The event was cancelled because the roads
were impassable back in February because of snow.
The meeting agreed that the only solution,
was that the points gained by each Club, which had qualified for the Finals, be
added up and the places in the final be decided on that basis.
Club Secretaries
will be asked to requisition medals for their teams on this basis and John Innes
will make arrangements for these to be delivered.
The following four teams finished the
indoor season in medal winning positions.

Schools Track and Field International
Victoria

U17 team competing at Grangemouth on Saturday 15th July.
Four members of Victoria Park won medals while representing Scottish Schools
against teams from England, Ireland and Wales.
Chris Bennett (pictured right) won the silver medal by throwing a new personal
best at the hammer of 63.55m.
Courtney
MacGuire (pictured left) won the bronze medal in the pole vault by clearing a

Gothenburg
Youth Games
A large group of Victoria Park athletes were representing Team Glasgow at the
annual Youth Games in Gothenburg, Sweden from the 7th to the 9th of July.
Many new personal best performances were achieved by the group but the icing on
the cake was the Bronze medal won by Abbey McGhee in an exciting Ladies U17 800m
with a time of 2:13.76. It was well worth staying in the stadium till
nearly 9pm to see Abbey win the medal and achieve a new PB.
All
of the athletes enjoyed the special atmosphere created by the surroundings
within the famous Ulevi Stadium and rose to the occasion over 3 days of intense
competition.
They also enjoyed the company of their team-mates and the beautiful sights of
Gothemburg.
The trip was organised by Brian Donaldson of Glasgow Athletics for the third
year in succession and was a wonderful experience for our young athletes.

Death of Frank Beattie
We received the very sad news today that Frank Beattie died at Drumchapel
Hospital on Saturday 8th of July. He was 96 years of age and in very good
health until he suffered a stroke in April of this year.
Frank was the last surviving founder member of the Club. He was one of the
group of athletes who formed Victoria Park Athletics Club on the 4th of April
1930.
Frank was in attendance at the Clubs 75th Anniversary dinner last year and
thoroughly enjoyed his celebrity status. He held court with all of those
in attendance and gave us all an insight into the early years of the Club and
the characters who made the club famous.
His late brother Sam was a life member of the Club and was the first Victoria
Park athlete to wear a Great Britain vest. Frank himself was a fine
athlete and a mentor to many of the athletes who went on to make Victoria Park
the success it was in the 50's and 60's.
After he finished competing as an athlete, he continued to help with the
administration of the club and held many posts on the various committees
including a period as Club Treasurer.
Even in retirement, he kept in touch and called the current Club Secretary on a
couple of occasions just to share a funny story and recount an amusing tale from
the past.
Frank will be sadly missed by everyone at the club who new him.
His funeral will take place at 3pm on Wednesday the 12th of July 2006 at
Clydebank Crematorium. All of his old friends and club-mates are invited
to join his son Alan and daughter in law Christine for the service and
afterwards at the West Park Hotel, Great Western Road, Clydebank.

The next meeting of the National Junior
League will take place on Sunday 16th July at Carlisle and Brian Donaldson has
sent the following message:
There are places available in the
Team. If you have, or know off, athletes who wish to be considered for places
in the Team I would ask that you let the athletes know that this is the case and
letting them have a copy of the attached form.
In order that the Team be in with
a chance of competing in the Promotion Match, we must win the last Division
Match. It would be spectacular if Glasgow were to produce a full Team, with
athletes only competing in the events they train for.
Because this match is in Carlisle
we will be leaving Glasgow on the Sunday morning and will be happy to have
Schools' Internationalists competing.
If you are interested in competing,
