Don Valley StadiumAAA's Championships

The England Athletics U15 and U17 Championships take place at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield on the 11th and 12th of August this year.

The closing date for entries is the 16th of July.

Report on Team Glasgow visit to Middlesbrough – Sunday 1st July 2007

Martin HayesAlthough the team was weakened due to athletes having other engagements over the weekend those who attended performed well and finished in 4th place only 42 points behind the 3rd placed team. Although not confirmed it is understood that the team are still lying in 1st place overall so, as the lead is only 1 point, we will need a good turn out at the next match on 29th July.

The team was made up mostly of VP-Glasgow athletes all of whom pulled out the stops to make up for the low numbers.

Rebecca FinchThe Girls did particularly well with Aisling and Abbey McGhee and Rebecca Finch each doing 2 track and at least 1 field event each. Aisling was first in the 400m in a seasons’ best of 59.6 and 3rd in the 100m in 14.0 while Abbey took 2nd in the 800m (2:14.3) and 3rd in the 200m (28.4). Rebecca took 3rd in both the 1500 (4:59.8 and the 3000m (10:40.3). The girls covered the Long and triople Jumps and Shot and Discus were they picked up 2 third places and 2 4th places.

The boys covered what events they could and the best results were Martin Hayes (1st in 400mHurdles – 61.3 and the2000m S/chase –6:36.6) and Liam Milligan who, among other things, was 2nd B in the Javelin with 31.79.  Lorn Menzies was 1st B in the 400m (53.5). Niall Murray was the only other athlete with a 1st and that was in the B Triple Jump when he cleared 11m17. Niall also ran the 2ooom s/chase and came 2nd B in 8.19.3. Derek Gibb also took part and gained valuable points for the team.

Linwood Open Graded - 27th June

One of Charlie Murray's group set a new PB at the Open Graded at Linwood on Wednesday 27th of June.

Stuart Ross ran his first sub 2 minute 800m with a time of 1:59.34s.

Stuart has now passed the Scottish Target on the Power Of Ten and is lying 4th on the performance list.


David MartinSwedish Open Championships - Gothenburg

The Club was well represented in Gothenburg over the weekend which started on Friday 29th of June and despite the high standard of competition, several medals were won and numerous PB's set.

Erin Leggate was 1st in the U19 High Jump with a height of 1.72m.

David Martin was 1st in the U19 400m with a time of 48.71s.

Suzanne Begg was 1st in the U17 100m with a time of 12.14s and 1st in the 200m with a time of 24.73s.

Gregor Innes was 2nd in the U17 300m Hurdles with a time of 38.59s.

Young Athletes League - Transport

The U13's, U15's and U17's will be competing in the YAL on Sunday the 8th of July at Grangemouth Stadium.

One minibus has been booked and will be leaving from the Car Park of Scotstoun Stadium at 10am.  Gordon will be the driver.

The cost of the journey will be £3 per head.

If you intend travelling on the bus, could you give your name to Gordon.


U20+U23 AAA Championships

Beth PotterThe Championships were held at Bedford on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of June.

Beth Potter continued her excellent form and won the Bronze Medal in the U20 3000m with a time of 9:34.13.  Beth has also been selected as a member of the team for the IAAF World Youth Championships to be staged in Ostrava in the Czech Republic from the 11th to the 15th of July.  Congratulations Beth.

Erin Leggate was 4th in the U20 High Jump with a height of 1.74m.

Chris Bennett was 5th in the U20 Hammer with a distance of 59.80m, a new PB.

Calum Innes was 6th in the Invitation 110m Hurdles with a new PB time of 14.66s.

The biggest disappointment over the weekend came when David Martin while leading in his heat of the U20 400m Hurdles, hit the last hurdle and crashed out of the event.  The good news is that David was uninjured and was back at training as usual.


Road Running Roundup

Susan FinchSusan Finch has had a busy and successful schedule lately.  Susan finished in 3rd place in the British Masters Ladies 5K Road Race Championships at Horwich in Lancashire on Sunday 24th June in a new PB of 17:25. 

Susan was also the winner of the Co-Op 5K Challenge at Glasgow Green on Tuesday 19th of June with a time of 17:32 and 1st again in the Greaves Sports Running Festival 10K at Rouken Glen on the 14th of June with a course record time of 37:35.

VP-Glasgow Men won the Team Race on Sunday 24th June at the East Kilbride Half Marathon.

The first three over the line achieved the winning score.

Kenny McVeyGerry Craig was 8th with a time of 1:19.38.  Mark Ashby was 22nd with a time of 1:24.15, Duncan Thomson was 34th with a time of 1:26.16 and Allan Hamilton was 40th with a time of 1:27.11.

Kenny McVey (pictured right) was 19th and 4th M55 in the Scottish Vets 5K Championships on Wednesday 15th of June with a time of 19:07.  Kenny, who has been the subject of much gossip over the years, finally changed his vest for the first time in over 50 years.  Well done Kenny.

The 10K For Men was held at Bellahouston Park, Glasgow on Sunday 18th of June. (Fathers Day).  VP-Glasgow was well represented with Alistair Douglas 8th with a time of 35:58, Stuart Barnet 10th with a time of 36:25, Derek Gibb 15th with a time of 37:24 and Joe Doyle 36th with a time of 38:58.

Congratulations to Susan and the winning mens team.


Scottish Womens League

Jo MoultrieVP-Glasgow ladies had a successful day at Scotstoun in the 2nd match of the womens league on Sunday 24th June where they finished in 3rd place.

Suzanne Begg collected full points for her win in the U17 200m with a time of 25.37s.  Rebecca Riches finished in 3rd place in the Senior 100m with a time of 12.9s and Mairi Bowie was 3rd in the U15 100m with a time of 13.92s.

Hannah Campbell was 1st in the U17 300m Hurdles with a time of 46.91s.

In the middle distance events, Pamela Nicholson was 1st in the Senior 800m with a time of 2:17.65.  Hollie Young was 1st in the U15 800m with a time of 2:17.2 and Rhian Dawes was 3rd in the U17 800m with a time of 2:20.32.

Jo Moultrie had an impressive win in the Senior 1500m with a time of 4:39.69.

In the throws, Clare Cameron was 1st in the Senior Discus with a distance of 35.12m.  Catriona Cicero Sola was 2nd in the Senior Javelin with a distance of 28.22m and Katie Horne was 2nd in the Senior Hammer with a distance of 46.36m.

Hollie YoungIn the Jumps, Catherine Clark had the best performance of the day while winning the U15 Long Jump with a distance of 4.87m.  Sarah Gray was 2nd in the U15 High Jump with a height of 1.5m and Augusta Carman was 3rd in the U17 Long Jump with a distance of 4.66m.

In the Relays, the Senior women were 1st in the 4x100m with a time of 50.20s.  The U17's were 3rd with a time of 51.3s and the U15's also finished 3rd with a time of 54.4s.

Well done Ladies, a great effort by everyone in terrible weather conditions.  Thanks to Sheila MacDonald for compiling the results.  She did add these comments -

"The girls turned up and competed bravely and well in conditions which had them running from the track as well as round it, but didn’t prevent them producing consistently good results despite the appalling rain.  This was an admirable show of concentration and dedication, and well done to each and every one of you."

Scottish Mens League

Mathew HestorThe men were in action at Grangemouth on Sunday 24th of June in dreadful weather conditions.  A great team effort gave VP-Glasgow their second win of the season and leaves them top of Division 2.

In the sprints, Andrew Strain was 3rd in the 100m with a time of 11.87s and Neale Kelly was 3rd B with a time of 12.36s.  In the 200m, Andrew was 3rd with a time of 24.13s and Derek Watson Snr was 3rd B with a time of 25.04s.

In the 110m Hurdles, Neale Kelly was 1st with a time of 16.22s and Liam McDermid was 2nd B with a time of 17.90s.  In the 400m Hurdles, Liam was 1st with a time of 58.55s and Charlie Murray was 2nd with a time of 64.4s.

Neale KellyThe 400m was won by Gregor Innes with a time of 51.50 and the B race was won by Mathew Hestor with a time of 52.01s.

In the middle distance events, Lee Cassidy was 2nd in the 800m with a time of 1:58.54 and Derek Watson Snr was 4th in the B race with a time of 2:07.52.  Chris Watson was 1st in the 1500m with a time of 4:02.46 and Martin Hayes was 1st in the B race with a time of 4:15.48.

Derek Gibb was 3rd in the 5000m with a time of 17:45.00 and Vernon Phoenix was 6th B with a time of 18:29.94.

In the throws, Gerry Farrell won the Discus with a throw of 34.80m and Stuart Todd was 2nd B with a throw of 25.67m.  Martin Taylor was 1st in the Shot with a throw of 11.27m and Gerry was 1st B with a distance of 9.39m.  Gerry was also 2nd in the Hammer with a throw of 32.37m and Lorn MenziesStuart Todd was 4th B with a throw of 16.79m.

In the Jumps, the Pole Vault was cancelled due to the weather, however Martin Taylor was 1st in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.98m and Liam McDermid was 1st B with a distance of 5.62m.  Thomas Campbell was 3rd in the Triple Jump with a distance of 11.57m.

The 4x100m Relay team of Neale Kelly, Martin Taylor, Stuart Todd and Andrew Strain were 1st in a time of 46.34s while the 4x400m Relay team of Lorn Menzies, Gregor Innes, Mathew Hestor and Lee Cassidy was also 1st. (time not known)

Polaroid 10K - Vale Of Leven

Susan PartridgeThe last of the series was held at Vale Of Leven on Sunday 17th of June.

The winner of the Ladies race was Susan Partridge in a time of 34:38.  Jill Knowles was 6th in a time of 37:50,  Jacqui Thomson was 9th and 3rd F35 with a time of 38:47 and Christine Catterson was 49th and 22nd F35 with a time of 45:50.

Gerry Craig was the first of the men home in 43rd place with a time of 36:39, Mark Ashby was 57th and 11th M40 with a time of 38:04 and  Duncan Thomson was 73rd with a time of 39:11.

Allan Hamilton was 74th in a time of 39:11 and Vernon Phoenix was 237th in a time of 47:33.

Congratulations to Susan on an excellent win.


Gerry CraigPolaroid 10K - Dumbarton

The third of the annual Polaroid 10K series took place at Dumbarton on Thursday 7th of June. 

Jacqui Thomson was 2nd female and 1st Vet35 in a time of 38:05.  Christine Catterson was 45th and 19th Vet35 with a time of 44:53.

Gerry Craig finished in 38th position in a time of 35:56, ahead of Mark Ashby 73rd in 37:30, Derek Gibb 74th in 37:33, Duncan Thomson 76th in 37:34, Alan Hamilton 104th in 39:04.

750 athletes started the race.

U20 & U23 - Scottish Championships and Junior Relays

David MartinThe Championships were held at Meadowbank Stadium on Sunday 17th of June.  VP-Glasgow picked up an excellent collection of medals and set a number of new records.

In the sprints, David Martin was 1st in the U20 400m with a time of  48.65s and 2nd in the 200m with a time of 22.24s.

Suzanne Begg was 1st in the U20 100m with a time of 12.27s, just ahead of her team-mate Rebecca Riches who was 3rd with a time of 12.65s and 1st in the 200m with a time of 24.86s, just ahead of her team-mate Danielle Osborne who was with a time of 25.43s.

Nicola Gossman was 3rd in the final of the U23 100m in a time of 12.97s.

Nicola Hood was 1st in the U20 1500m Steeplechase with a New Scottish U20 Record of 5:07.9.  Martin Hayes was 2nd in the U20 2000m Steeplechase with a time of 6:33.9.

Rebecca Finch was 1st in the U20 1500m with a time of 4:47.41.  Abbey McGhee was 3rd in the 800m with a time of 2:14.67.

Neale Kelly was 2nd in the U23 110m Hurdles in a time of 15.76s and Eve Carrington was 3rd in the U20 100m Hurdles with a time of 16.05s.

Chris Bennett was 2nd in the U20 Hammer with a distance of 58.21m.

Thomas Campbell was 2nd in the U20 High Jump with a height of 1.95m.  Thomas was also 2nd in the Pole Vault with a height of 4.05m, ahead of his team-mate Jamie Sinclair who was 3rd with the same height.

Rhian Dawes, Jo Moultrie and Beth PotterErin Leggate was 1st in the U20 High Jump with a height of 1.75m, ahead of her team-mate Eve Carrington who was 2nd with a height of 1.60m.

Courtney MacGuire was 2nd in the U20 Pole Vault with a height of 3.35m and Eilidh Dorrian was 1st in the U23 Pole Vault with a height of 3.25m.

Gregor Innes, Mathew Hestor, Calum Innes and Lorn MenziesThe U17 Ladies were 1st in the 3x800m Relay in a time of 6.53.98.  The team of Rhian Dawes, Jo Moultrie and Beth Potter set a new Scottish U17 Record.

The U15 Girls team of Michaela Stephen, Sarah Potter and Hollie Young were 2nd in the 3x800m Relay with a time of 7:12.04.

The U17 Men were 1st in the 4x400m with a time of 3.24.86.  The time set by Lorn Menzies, Calum Innes, Mathew Hester and Calum Innes was a Championship Best Performance.

AAA's Of England

Bedford StadiumThe Under 20 and 23 Championships are on the 23rd and 24th of June at Bedford.

The VP-Glasgow contingent will be leaving the Kelvin Hall at 9am on Friday 22nd of June and travelling South by bus.

Accommodation has been arranged at the Holiday Inn, Sandy, Bedfordshire.  If you require any more information, you should contact Margaret Bennett by e-mail.

Athletes are reminded that if they intend asking the Club for financial assistance they should follow the instructions at this link before travelling.

Scotstoun Stadium - Sudirman Cup

The International Badminton competition will be on at Scotstoun this week.  Access to the Stadium car park will be restricted to competitors and spectators.

Parking is available within Victoria Park.

Don't be put off when you are turned away from the Stadium, the track is open as usual.


Scottish Schools Championships - 8th and 9th of June

The Championships were a great success for VP-Glasgow athletes.  A great haul of medals were won with some exceptional performances over the two days of competition.

The outstanding personal performance came from Beth Potter who was 1st in the U17 1500m in a time of 4:27.39, a new Championship Best Beth PotterPerformance.  She took over 5 seconds off the previous record which was set by Yvonne Murray back in 1981.  She also won the 3000m in a new Championship Best Performance of 9:37.84, taking over 11 seconds off the previous record.  A tremendous achievement.

In the endurance events, Martin Hayes was 1st in the O17 2000m Steeplechase in a time of 6:09.74.  Nicola Hood was 1st in the O17 3000m with a time of 10:25.89.  Josephine Moultrie was 3rd in the 3000m in a time of 10:22.71.

In the middle distance events, Hollie Young was 1st in the U15 1500m with a PB time of 4:47.88 and was 2nd in the 800m in a time of 2:15.89.

Nicola HoodSean Fontana was 3rd in the U17 1500m in a time of 4:10.31.  Rebecca Finch was 1st in the O17 1500m in a time of 4:45.13 and 3rd in the 800m in a time of 2:15.8.  Abbey McGhee was 2nd in the O17 800m with a time of 2:15.8.

In the sprints, Rebecca Riches was 1st in the O17 100m in a time of 12.88s and 2nd in the 200m in a time of 27.1s.  Jonathan Byrne-Leitch was 2nd in the 100m in a time of 12.72s.  Heather Rankine was 3rd in the O17 100m with a time of 13.58s.

Suzanne Begg was 1st in the U17 100m in a time of 12.36 and 1st in the 200m with a time of 25.27s.  Danielle Osborne was 1st in the O17 200m with a time of 26.2s.  John Craig was 2nd in the U17 100m in a PB time of 11.49s.

Rebecca Riches and Martin HayesMathew Hester was 3rd in the U17 400m in a time of 51.29s.  Aisling McGhee was 2nd in the O17 400m in a time of 59.81s.

Chris Barnes was our only medallist in the throws where he  was 1st in the U14 Discus with a distance of 29.00m.

In the hurdles events, Calum Innes was 1st in the U17 100m Hurdles in a PB time of 13.75s, Augusta Carman was 3rd in the U17 80m Hurdles in a time of 12.50s and Chris Marshall was 3rd in the U14 80m Hurdles in a time of 14.60m.

Gregor Innes was 1st in the U17 400m Hurdles with a time of 56.06s and was 2nd in the 400m in a PB time of 50.18s.  Hannah Campbell was 1st in the U17 300m Hurdles with a PB time of 46.05s.

In the jumps, Lara Davidson was 2nd in the U15 Long Jump with a distance of 4.82m, 2nd in the High Jump with a height of 1.40m and 1st in the Long Jump with a distance of 4.98m.

Jamie SinclairJamie Sinclair was 1st in the O17 Pole Vault with a new PB height of 4.10m.  Courtney MacGuire was 2nd in the O17 Pole Vault with a height of 3.20m. 

Ciaran Kohli-Lynch was 3rd in the U17 Long Jump with a distance of 5.93m.

Sarah Gray was 1st in the U15 High Jump with a new PB Height of 1.57m.

Kerry Steel was 1st in the O17 Triple Jump with a distance of 11.11m and 2nd in the Long Jump with a distance of 4.98m.  Stephanie O'Neill was 3rd in the O17 Triple Jump with a distance of 9.59m.

East Dunbartonshire County Championship

The County Primary School Championships were held at the Kelvin Hall on Tuesday 29th May.  Fraser Barbour won the 600m in a time of 1:46 which was 8 seconds faster than his previous PB.

Well done Fraser.


IAAF World Cross Country Championships 2008

*MARSHALS WANTED*

The 2008 Cross Country Championships will be held in Holyrood Park in Edinburgh on March 30th 2008.

Volunteers to act as Marshals at this event are asked to contact Graham Smith or Alan Potts as soon as possible.  The only requirement is that the Marshals are over 18 years of age.

As well as the main event, the organisers are planning to run youth and community races to inspire grassroots involvement.  They will also run a home countries international for athletes who miss out on the Great Britain Team.


Scottish Schools Pentathlon - Relays

Katie RichesThe schools Pentathlon Championships were held at Grangemouth on Saturday 2nd of June and VP-Glasgow athletes were well represented.

Gregor Innes was 1st in the U17 competition with a total of 3199 points, just ahead of his brother Calum who was 2nd with a total of 3146 points.

Katie Riches was 2nd in the O17 competition with a total of 2218 points.  Lucinda Logan was 3rd in the U17 competition with a total of 2514 points and Lara Davidson was 3rd in the U15 event with a total of 2539 points.

Christina Clark was a member of the winning Lenzie relay team that won the U14 4x100m relay in a time of 54.02.

Aisling McGhee and her sister Abbey were in the High School relay team that finished 2nd in the 4x100m in a time of 51.74s just ahead of the Glasgow Academy team which included Emma Crichton and finished 3rd in a time of 52.32.
