Scottish Young Athletes League
Match 3 of the SYAL which was held on Sunday 4th July
at Grangemouth Stadium was remarkable in many ways and
so I would like to change the usual format of our
“Match Report”.
Firstly, the weather conditions
were absolutely horrible for all concerned. (Well,
except for everyone sheltering in the Stand, that is.)
A huge thank you must go to all our Officials who turn
out for us on a
regular basis but really pulled the short straw on
this occasion. I have never known rain like it at an
Athletic Competition – not even at Wishaw!
It could not have been easy to run
and jump into driving rain so, very well done to all
the athletes who achieved P.B.s on the day. In the U15
age group alone there were a total of 15. Patrick
Bowman managed P.B.s in all 3 of his events before
having to stand down from the Relay due to becoming
unwell.
In the Sprints events Mhairi
Patience achieved a Grade 1 in the U15G 75m Hurdles
and a Grade 2 in the 200m with times of 11.63s and
26.65s respectively and both P.Bs. In the Distance
events Lewis Boyle achieved a Grade 2 in the U15B
1500m with a time of 4.26.51s; Gillian Black also
achieved a Grade 2 in the U13G 1200m with a time of
4.08.43s. She was placed 2nd in what was definitely
the most exciting and determined sprint finish of the
day and had us all on our feet, cheering.
However, my unstinting admiration
goes to all those athletes (and there were many of
them) who competed in events which would not have been
their first choice or, more to the point, never their
choice. Due to holidays, injuries, illness and a
couple of athletes not turning up there were more
events to be covered than we had athletes for but
everyone who was asked to “fill in” did so without
complaint. Due to this, the Club managed to progress
to the SYAL Scottish Final which will be held at
Grangemouth on Sunday 1st August. Please make sure
that this is put on your calendars.

So, a very big thank you to
EVERYONE who competed on Sunday but a wee mention for
a few athletes who caught my eye (and wished they
hadn’t!).
Jude Sloan-Dennison for her
spirited run in the U15 Girls 1500m in which she came
last but was delighted with the thought that it was
probably a P.B. Ethan Sloan-Dennison for competing in
the U17 Men’s 4 x 100m Relay and making us all agree
that he should remain a Middle Distance runner. Lewis
Boyle for competing in the U15 Boys 4 x 100m Relay
having just finished the 1500m. (Which he won, by the
way.) Andrew McCormack for taking part in the U17
Men’s Discus when he had never done it before and
really, really didn’t ever want to do it. Marc Rooney
for not complaining when I tried to force him to take
part in the U17 Men’s Shot even although he’s an U15
Boy. (By that point it obviously didn’t matter to me
how the points were gained!!)
Thanks again from your roving
reporter, Linda Innes. I’m very proud of you all.

Scottish Women’s Athletic League

Overall, VP-Glasgow’s women had a disappointing day at
Meadowbank on Sunday 20th June, finishing in last
place. This was largely due to the fact that the club
was not represented in around 38% of events. There
were however, some excellent individual performances:
The senior ladies did particularly
well. In the field events, Lucinda Logan won the High
Jump, clearing 1.65m. Estelle Kagambega won the
Javelin, throwing 39.47m and Stacey Wilson was 2nd in
the Discus with 35.71m, 3rd in the Hammer, throwing
49.86m, and 3rd in the Shot Putt with 10.91m.
On the track, Carly Sharp was 2nd
in the 200m running 25.44s and 3rd in the 100m with
12.6s (PB), with Erin McIlveen running 59.58s to come
3rd in the 400m.
For the U17s Tatiana Quick was 3rd
in the 800m with a PB of 2:23.01.

Mhairi Hendry won the U15 800m with
a time of 2:20.71, and together with Eliza Chiswell,
who ran a PB of 2:31.47 to win the B race, achieved
maximum points for that event; whilst in the U15 200m
Abbie McFarlane also ran a PB of 27.86s to take 2nd in
the B race.
Other PBs, to “Power of 10”
rankings standard, were: Erin Halliday, U13 100m,
14.5s; Lauren Murray, U13 100m, 14.6s and 200m,
30.27s; Catriona Booth, U13 LJ, 3.92m; and Kim
Creechan, U17 300m, 44.1s.

Bank of

Championships Grangemouth Stadium, Sunday 13th June
2010
VP-Glasgow was extremely well
represented at the above Age Group champs but had only
3 teams (out of 7 entered) competing in the Relay

up
for
in quality by all three teams being medal winners.
There were many excellent performances with

clapping. Very well done to all the medal winners

UK Woman’s
League 6th June
Our Senior
Women travelled to Wakefield for the first match of
the UK League on 6 June. It was wet and miserable at
the start of the match but despite the rain, in two of
the opening events, we scored maximum points with A
and B wins for Stacey and Elizabeth in the Hammer and
Courtney and Jen in the Pole Vault. Our other
individual winner was Jane in the B String Long Jump.
Our sprinters, Sarah, Diane, Jade
(MacLaren) and Jade (Barclay) all finished within the
top four in their races Our throwers, Stacey, Kirsty
(Yates), Claire, Elizabeth and Estelle all had good
results with several second places as well as the wins
in the Hammer. In the jumps, in addition to our Pole
Vault, Kirsty (Barr), Kirsty (Yates), Jane and
Courtney all placed well in their events contributing
valuable points.
Our 100m Hurdlers, Jane and Kirsty
(Yates) did well against some strong opposition.
Regrettably, we couldn’t field any 400m Hurdlers. We
had no specialists hurdlers with us and with the 400mH
being the first event I couldn’t expect anyone to
cover it in case it jeopardised their performance in
their main event.
Along with most of the other clubs,
we had problems with middle distance.
Our 4x100 relay squad of Jane,
Diane, Kirsty (Barr) and Sarah came a creditable third
behind Newham and Essex Beagles and Thames Valley
Harriers. This was a great performance as these two
clubs are well known for their strength in sprints.
There was an excellent team performance in the final
event of the day from our 4x400 squad of Sarah, Jade
(Barclay), Diane and Jade (McLaren). Sarah ran the
first leg and handed over in second place, the NEB
second runner opened up a big lead over the first 200
but Jade B timed her run well and reduced it
substantially by the handover. Diane closed over the
third lap and handed over to Jade M who sat behind the
NEB runner (Victoria Ohurougu no less) and overtook on
the home straight to bring us home in the lead.

Thames Valley Harriers 211 points
Newham and Essex Beagles 190 points Victoria Park City
of Glasgow 174 points Wakefield Harriers and AC 155
points Medway and Maidstone 134 points Coventry Godiva
125 points Havering Mayersbrook 110 points Herts
Phoenix 106 points
Thanks to everyone who contributed
to our good result, especially those who covered
several events, and to our officials, Christine,
Donald, Liz (Scott) and Liz (Wilder). Thanks also to
Assistant Team Manager, Claire. Our ‘Points Princess’
was Stacey who scored 21 individual points.
All our athletes performed well but
we lost points by not having cover for some events
(400MH x 2, 800, 1500, 3000 and 2000SC). The next
match is 4 July at Stevenage. If we can get cover for
those events we could finish either first or second
and be well on the way to be promoted next season. .
There is normally plenty of space on the bus so anyone
who wants to come along on either to support or help
out is very welcome.
Sandra
Branney, Team Manager

International Flanders Athletics Meeting
Chris Baillie returned to form in Belgium where he
finished 2nd in the 110m Hurdles with a time of 13.63s
into a slight head wind.
This was his fastest time since the
Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006.
British
Milers Club Meeting
Stuart Ross set a personal best
when finishing 2nd in the 800m at the BMC meeting at
Stretford, Manchester on Tuesday the 1st of June.
Stuarts new PB is 1:48.73, a time which currently tops
the Scottish senior rankings.
Congratulations to Chris and Stuart
